The best way to deal with conflicts,
is to not avoid them

Conflict resolution is always the goal

We encounter conflicts in life in different contexts. Whether in private or professional relationships – with your mother or your boss – they always occur to a lesser or greater extent. We notice situations that require conflict resolution, for example, when we avoid contact with a certain person, when we get tense or develop a defensive attitude.

This can also be reflected in physical reactions (stomach, neck or headaches). The resulting bad mood does not only affect your own well-being, but can also spread to several people, a family or a team. The fact that something is wrong is often reflected in overreactions. Emotions such as anger, fear, helplessness or despair arise in – objectively speaking – harmless situations. Conflict resolution is urgently needed then.

THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS CONFLICT RESOLUTION

Identify the conflicts

The comprehensive analysis of a conflict situation requires a focus on the essentials without letting emotions become prevalent or leave them out. The CEE coach’s task is to understand the entire complexity and dynamics of the situation and, in a first step, to identify and name the causes of the conflict together with the parties involved. In doing so, all possible triggers will be taken into consideration. For example, does the problem circle around factual and structural conflicts or rather about personal sensitivities resulting from competing goals or different fundamental values? The egos of those involved or their hurt feelings can also be the cause of conflicts.

The measures to be taken to resolve a conflict depend on the context. With his flexibility and empathy, the CEE coach creates the framework conditions for solution-oriented conflict management that pays attention to all the parties and factors involved and utilizes their potential.

Your benefit from conflict coaching:

  • Identification of resistance, needs, values, competing goals and others
    causes of conflict
  • Promotion of an objective and factual approach
  • Relief or facilitation of processes at various levels
  • Restoring transparency and the ability to act
  • Stress reduction thanks to recognizing one’s own solution potential
  • Increasing motivation and performance
  • Improvement in relationship skills

Systemic methods such as Refraiming, Reflecting Team or the Social Panorama (by Lucas Derks) help understand and change perspectives.

CONFLICT COACHING

For private individuals

Inner conflicts often prevent us from being or becoming active. Statements such as “I’d like more” or “I’ve always wanted more” indicate this inability to act without the actual conflict being addressed. The situation is similar with external conflicts (for example with another person). Your own behavior changes when you meet the person you are in conflict with. Resignation or anger can be the result. Contact may be avoided altogether or even broken off completely. You don’t have to let it get that far. In conflict coaching, you will not only work on the causes, but also focus on conflict resolution. Communicative competence will support you in conflict resolution. And this can be learned.

You will achieve:

  • Clarity regarding your own needs and desires
  • Inner peace and serenity
  • Recognition of the values that underlie your own behavior and that of others
  • Understanding, empathy and room for maneuver
  • Self-awareness and self-confidence with regard to your own resources
  • Improvement of relationships/communication
  • Stabilization of the state of health

CONFLICT COACHING

For companies

The rumor mill is churning, uncertainty is rising, the working atmosphere is deteriorating. At best, companies can still see that something is wrong, but a precise analysis of the problem or even stopping the downward spiral in terms of the working atmosphere is beyond their own resources. Whether manager or employee, whether power struggle and/or restructuring – in principle, everyone wants the same thing: to enjoy going to work. Conflicts not only have a negative impact on the working atmosphere, but also on the quality and effectiveness of work processes.

Your company will benefit from:

  • Harmonization of positions, roles and structures in the team
  • An improvement in the working atmosphere
  • Effective completion of work orders and a noticeable increase in quality
  • Job satisfaction and a boost in motivation and performance
  • Room for creativity and innovation
  • A lower sickness rate
  • Employee loyalty

Seeing conflict management as an opportunity

Conflicts are often seen as a problem and people try to avoid problems. In the long term, this approach will not lead to achieving the actual goal of balanced cooperation and a successful focus on work processes and content. However, if conflicts are actively addressed and seen as an opportunity and a pool of resources for further development and improvement, they can even have advantages. Conflicts act as a barometer for grievances. The earlier the barometer is triggered, the better. Because the easier it will be to get to the bottom of the causes of conflict and eliminate them.

The prerequisite for this is recognizing one’s own responsibility and the opportunity to help shape the situation. Otherwise there can be no lasting change. After all, a conflict that has been overcome should not return. In this context, it becomes clear that, ideally, a manager should act as a conflict coach who will not evaluate his employees but enable them to contribute to an active solution strategy from within. The situation is similar in a family context: if, for example, parents teach their children to address problems openly and find a solution together, their offspring will also be able to deal with conflict.

Problem-solving skills create trust – in your own abilities, but also in those of others. And trust is an ideal basis for living and working together.

Approach conflict resolution strategically

Regardless of whether you are a private individual or a company considering conflict coaching: The coaching specialists at the CEE Association will help you with a conflict analysis and subsequent solution orientation based on your existing resources. You will experience a process that focuses on personal responsibility and takes the interests of all parties involved into account. If you wish, you can of course also be accompanied by your coach during the implementation phase of the developed solution. Conflict coaching can take place in both settings: group and individual. Contact the coaching experts in a timely manner, so that the conflict will not lead to a standstill in the relationship work at your work or in a private context.
